Check-in alerts for an aging parent.

Cozy Concepts sets up a parent's home around Kansas City so the family gets a quiet heads-up when the day doesn't look like usual: no one up and about by mid-morning, the front door open at 3 AM, the house getting too cold. No cameras inside and nothing to wear. It's not a medical alert service.

How a check-in works.

A few small motion sensors go in the rooms your parent uses every morning, like the hall and the kitchen. Home Assistant learns nothing fancy: you pick a time, and if nobody has moved by then, the family gets a text. Most days, nothing happens, and that's the point.

The same sensors can turn on soft lights for a trip down the hall at night, if the hall has smart switches.

  • A text if there's no movement by a time you choose
  • An alert if a door opens in the middle of the night
  • An alert if the house gets too hot or too cold, from a smart thermostat
  • Lock codes for caregivers and family, with a note of which code opened the door

What it isn't.

This isn't a medical alert system or a monitoring service. It can't tell if someone has fallen, it doesn't call 911 or anyone else, and alerts only reach phones while the internet is working. If your parent needs help in an emergency, pair this with a medical alert service; this sits alongside it.

It's also not a camera on your parent. The house knows a room had movement, not what anyone was doing. We set it up with your parent, not around them.

NO CAMERAS INSIDE JUST A TEXT
What it costs
About $1,100

That's three Lutron motion sensors ($55 each) and the bridge they share ($80), a Yale smart lock ($215), our 20% for ordering, returns and warranty claims, and about three hours of our time to fit them and set up the check-ins. It's added to a Home Assistant setup; a thermostat or door sensors are extra.

New to Home Assistant? Setting it up, with the devices you already own connected, is about $2,000 to $2,400. What a setup includes. See example quotes.

Good questions.

Is this a medical alert system?

No. It can't detect a fall and it doesn't call 911 or a monitoring center. It sends the family a text when the day doesn't look like usual. If your parent needs emergency help, pair it with a medical alert service.

Does my parent need a smartphone?

No. Your parent uses the house as usual. The alerts go to the family's phones.

Are there cameras inside?

No. Motion sensors only tell the house that a room had movement. No video, no microphones.

What if the internet goes down?

The lights and lock keep working, but alerts can't reach your phone until the internet is back.

Is there a monthly fee?

Nothing monthly is required. You pay for the setup once. Our support plans (from $59 a month) are optional and month to month.

Where do you work?

Around Kansas City on both sides of the state line, including Overland Park, Olathe and the rest of Johnson County, and Jackson County, Missouri.
